<description>Thanks for that. I only bet on NRL in a relatively small way, and never get involved in teams with no reason to win. This only confirms my thinking. Cheers, KS

<description>Kevin, you may have noticed that I had originally selected the Roosters to win their last game of the season against the Cowboys at the + 13.5 points start, but “chopped” out of the bet on the Thursday as overwhelming information had filtered through to me that all was not well and you could smell a “rat” all the way to Toobruk. 24 hours later the game was suspended.

The punters involved used “bowlers” so it is impossible to identify who the punter(s) was, but obviously we hear things. It comes back to my article (Aug 13) called “Racing need to give footy some lessons on punting” which made the point that the NRL and AFL cannot continue to accept millions from bookies as sponsors of their game and not implement any protection mechanisms that could tarnish the image of their game.

They must have a Steward to oversee the betting transactions like they do for horse racing. Punters invest several millions of dollars on footy every week but we have no “Policeman”. The AFL and NRL just hold their hands out and accept the sponsorship monies, but turn a blind eye to the massive amounts invested on their games.

When we have a situation with a “dead rubber” game, the appetizing opportunity to “fix” a game is an obvious prospect for the scheming punter, and while ever our two biggest games in Australia continue to go with no Betting Steward in place we will continue to have these unwanted controversial headlines.

The AFL incredibly actually reward teams for “tanking” or playing “dead” as they can gain an extra player in the draft. We had a ludicrous situation this year when both St. Kilda and Geelong dropped many key players as it had no impact on if they finished in the first two places on the ladder. Huge betting plunges took place on both games prior to the teams being announced. This would never happen in a more professionally managed racing industry. The punter at least has a fighting chance.

The added disappointment about the Roosters story is that the media made many innuendos which implicated many innocent people. If you had read one of the stories you would automatically form an opinion of who was involved, which is totally incorrect.

If anyone is to blame for any dubious betting actions on the footy, it is the greedy administrators of the AFL and NRL for grabbing the cash and then shooting themselves in the foot.

Footy is no longer a fun game, it is big business.
